Inaccurate Report of Army Covenant Signing

Since its inception in 1968, the Islamic Centre Leicester has actively engaged with local authorities, organisations, statutory and voluntary bodies to further the needs and interests of Muslims living in the city of Leicester. Through this open dialogue, the Islamic Centre Leicester has been able to raise the needs and concerns of the British Muslim community at both the local and national level and successfully effect change.

Over the last few months the local 158 Army Regiment Royal Logistic Corps has attended events at the Islamic Centre Leicester to build an understanding of British Muslims and the religion of Islam. This unique interaction has allowed the Islamic Centre Leicester to present the true peaceful face of Islam and to relay the concerns of the Muslim community to Army representatives.

This Islamic Centre Leicester was pleased to receive Officers from the local 158 Regiment Corps at Friday Prayers on 16th September 2016; an event covered both in the local and regional press. It was incorrectly reported that the Islamic Centre would be signing the Armed Forces Community Covenant at this event.

The Armed Forces Community Covenant is a voluntary statement of mutual respect and support between a local civilian community and the local armed forces community. It outlines the moral obligation on us all to live with mutual respect; free from fear, persecution and discrimination, a principle given to us over 1400 years ago by our Prophet (peace be upon him).

We encourage all Muslim Brothers and Sisters to actively support all initiatives whether they be local, regional, national or international which counters the negative stereotype of Muslims and Islam which is so prevalent in the world today. The Islamic Centre Leicester will use all legitimate, legal and democratic channels to further the interest of Muslims. Where it is appropriate and does not compromise the true word of the Holy Quran and the teaching of our Prophet (peace be upon him), we will continue to build relationships and partnerships as peaceful British Muslims.
