Can you please comment about what Islam teaches us about friendship ?(for instance, different sex friends, or friends of different faiths).
Did the Prophet have many friends, and if so, who were they? Were they all Muslim? What did the Prophet enjoy doing in his 'spare' time?
There are several teachings regarding friendship given by our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). For example, he famously said,
‘The man is judged according to the Deen of his friend. Therefore each of you should look who he becomes friends with.’
Here, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) encourages us to keep friendship of the pious, because people tend to judge others according to the company they keep. If a person has immoral friends, then people will deem the person immoral too, even if he is not as such.
Keeping acquaintances with non-Muslims is accepted in Islam. In both Makka and Madina, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had a rapport with non-Muslims in the public and private domain. However, making friends with the different sex is clearly prohibited in Islam.
The Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) friends were his Companions, the most sincere and pious group of people ever to have existed.
