Folding trousers while praying Namaaz ?
I know that we Ahle Sunnat wa Jamaat do not entertain the folding of the trousers while praying Namaaz. Could you give the reasons behind it and some authentic proof forbidding us to practise this habit.
When a male Muslim performs Salah, then he should ensure that his lower garments do not drop below the ankles. Imam Muslim writes that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,
‘Allah does not look towards the one whose clothes drag out of arrogance.’
In a similar report recorded by Imam Bukhari, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,
‘whoever drags his clothes out of arrogance, Allah will not look towards him on the Day of Judgement.’
Both reports mean that Allah will not look towards the person with mercy.
Wearing long garments in those days was viewed as a sign of arrogance. This is why the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prohibited it, because no one from the creations of Allah has a right to express arrogance and pride. Imam Nawawi points out that if a person wears long garments with the intention of arrogance, then this is forbidden. He writes in Sharh Sahih Muslim,
‘It is not permissible to drop the garments below the ankles in a show of arrogance. And if it is done for another reason, then it is Makruh. And the clear meaning of the Ahadith suggests that it is only forbidden when done due to arrogance; this is what Imam Shafi has said too.
Though the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) outlawed the practice of having long trousers that drop below the ankles, he also forbade the practice of folding up the garments (at the arm sleeves or the trousers). Imam al-Bukhari records a Hadith (no. 770) narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,
‘I have been ordered to perform Sajda on seven places; the forehead, and he pointed with his finger to his nose, and the two hands, the knees and the sides of the feet. [And we have been ordered] not to gather the clothes and the hair.’
Therefore our position is that the trousers certainly should not drop below the ankles. If they do however, then they should not be folded up because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade this. Rather, they should be left unfolded.
