Kaffara (expiation) for breaking on oath on the Quran
One of my female colleagues has told me that one of her friend sworn to Holy Quran falsely during a clash for saving her prestige, honor and respect. But since she knows that she was at fault and to maintain her respect she has taken that step, she is now afraid of the consequences of swearing to Holy Quran and wants to know how she can get atonement of such act. The answer of this question has now become the matter of her life & death. Please reply as soon as possible. I shall be very thankful to you for this act of kindness.
When a person takes an oath (yamin) and then does not fulfill it, then he/she has to give Kaffara (expiation). This takes on the following forms and it must be fulfilled immediately: (i) To feed ten poor people (ii) To clothe ten people, meaning sufficient clothing to cover their bodies with decency (iii) To free a slave (iv) If the person cannot do these, then he/she has to fast for three days. Along with this, the person should repent sincerely for taking a false oath on something as sacred as the Final Word of Allah.
