Funerals during the Coronavirus Pandemic

The Islamic Centre Leicester, after consulting renowned Muftis and Ulema in Britain, India and Pakistan have formulated the following policy:

  • Washing facilities for the deceased will remain available to all Muslims.
  • The body of the deceased may be released by the hospital in a sealed body bag. Washing (ghusl) of the deceased will be carried out by pouring water over the bag.
  • The body bag will be considered as the Kafan, and hence no white cloth will be provided.
  • Alternatively, if relatives or next of kin wish to perform ghusl over the body of the deceased and use a white cloth as a Kafan, this will only be allowed if volunteers who perform the ghusl and wrap the deceased in the white cloth / Kafan have appropriate personal protective equipment and clothing. The mosque management committee and trustees do not take any responsibility for any subsequent infections that may be contracted by those who perform the ghusl and wrap the deceased in white cloth / Kafan.
  • After ghusl, the deceased will be put into a coffin box and we urge relatives or next of kin to bury the deceased as quickly as possible.
  • There may be an extra charge to sanitise the washing facilities after ghusl has been completed.
  • Relatives or next of kin should perform salat-ul-janazah with minimal attendance.
  • It is preferred that the salat-ul-janazah be led by a relative or next of kin, if this is not possible an Imam of the masjid will be made available.

Note: This policy is subject to change in accordance with future instructions issued by the UK Government.
