Is salaami compulsory ?

Is salaami compulsory or do we just do it so we are showing our love for our Prophet (SAW)?
Am I right in thinking this is a matter of choice?

It is a way to show our love and respect towards Rasoolullah (Sallahu Alaihi Wasallam), if you mean by Salami ‘the Salaato Sallam’which is the way of Ahlussunah Wa Jama’ah to stand up and pray Sallam, then it is Mustahab and preferd to do so.
If anyone dose not stand up and claims that it is Bid’ah then he is missguided. The command of Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala in Quraan; INN ALLAHA WA MALAIKATAHU YU SALLUNA ALAN NABI YA AYYUHAL LAZEENA AMANU SALLU ALAIHI WA SALLIMU TASLIMA
Allah and His angels shower blessings on the Nabee (Prophet). You who believe! Ask blessings on him and salute him with a worthy salutation. [Quran: Al Ahzab Chapter 33]
is a general command and order to send Durood and Sallam regardless of sitting down or standing up. There for it is the matter of love n respect.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says; WA TU’AZZIROOHU WA TUWAQQIROOH’. That you (mankind) may believe in Allah and His (Prophetic) Messenger, and may assist him, and honour him, and may glorify Allah morning and evening. (48:9)
